West Virginia Teacher Careers, Certification & Salaries

West Virginia has not been a strong industrial state historically; the economy has been driven by coal for generations. But despite the relatively modest tax base and the low overall pay structure for teachers, some districts pay their educators pretty well compared to the state average. In recent years there has been some gravitation of technology industry into the state and the University has played an active research role in a number of areas. The Department of Education has developed an Innovation Zone program to try and allow districts to experiment with curriculum changes and teaching methods in order to introduce some creativity into public education at the local level. The first female administrator in the history of the Department recently took the reins.
