South Dakota Teacher Careers

South Dakota has a population of just over 800,000 people. The state has experienced a good deal of rural flight in recent years, so much so that the total increase in population over the past 10 years has been 5% despite a rapid rate of growth in the Sioux Falls area. In the larger towns and cities teachers are represented by the National Education Association local affiliate, but despite contractual arrangements state budget woes have led to cuts in education salaries in 2011. The Native American population, while less than 10% of the total, is predominant in several of the rural counties. On some of the reservations unemployment approaches 70%, so teachers working in the rural areas may be confronted with a low income environment.
