Indiana remains a mix of rural and urban communities with the old industrial area around Gary, the commercial and academic center in Indianapolis, and the numerous agricultural communities all contributing to the state's economy. The urban areas have mushroomed so that today the state, ranks eighteenth in population density with 6.5 million residents. Teaching in Indiana can take you to a hard core industrial city in the northwest of the state, a college town like Lafayette, or to the commercial and financial center in Indianapolis. All are very different municipal environments with school districts that reflect the regional traits.
Indiana Teacher Salaries
The State of Indiana is twenty fourth among the fifty states in ranking for teacher salaries. According to a 2009 survey the average teacher salary for Indiana teachers was $49,569.1 The state's biggest school district is in Indianapolis, very much an urban district with an enrollment of 35,500 and a teacher roster of 2,559.
