Hawaii Teacher Careers, Certification & Salaries

Hawaii is the only state in the Union with a single, unified school system. The Hawaii Department of Education operates 255 regular schools and three special schools, serving 182,000 students. There are 13,000 teachers, counselors, and librarians working in the system throughout the islands. Most of the teaching opportunities that arise are in the outlying districts of Oahu and on the other islands, away from the urban center of Honolulu. There are School Community Councils that provide a platform for local involvement and support for schools on an individual basis.
