By the time most teachers have earned their Bachelor’s degree and found a teaching position, going back to school to earn a Master’s degree may not be high on their list. The fact that they have already invested a fair amount of money and time into getting the education they needed to have a career may also make a teacher hesitant to reenroll and begin furthering their own education. Since just about every state has requirements that must be met in order for a teacher to renew their teaching certification, it may also seem like they are getting a continuing education without ever stepping foot back in a college.

Of course, most teachers go into this profession because they are lifelong learners themselves. This is actually one of the defining characteristics of good teachers. They strive to continue growing in knowledge so that they can provide the best information to their students. With this in mind, a Master’s degree in Education can help a teacher stay on top of emerging technologies, methods, and trends so that they are always up-to-date in their chosen specialty. At every level of teaching, the best educators are generally the ones that are always hungry to learn more.

Earning a Master’s degree in Education is not necessarily the easiest thing to do, but it will definitely lead to more respect from coworkers, administrators, board members, and parents. It is also a very visible and obvious sign that a teacher is dedicated to being the best professional educator that he or she can be. Additionally, a Master’s degree can be a big factor when it comes to whether or not a teacher gets tenure. While the respect of the people around may not be the most important reason to earn a Master’s degree, it is definitely an added benefit that one can expect if they decide to further their professional education.

There is also the matter of earning more money. Teachers are already laughably underpaid considering the amount of work and time that they put in. While it will cost more money to earn a Master’s degree, it will also put a teacher in a better position to earn higher pay throughout their career. Additionally, it is much easier to move up the career ladder when a teacher has an advanced degree. Most of the administrators, counselors, directors, and specialists in the school system started out their careers as teachers. Moving up into one of these positions almost always requires a minimum of a Master’s degree.

There are also a variety of other things, aside from teaching, that a person can do with a Master’s degree in Education. For example, a person with their Master’s degree in Education can find a career as a researcher, and instructor at a two-year college or community college, a textbook author, an educational consultant, or even a corporate trainer. Having a Master’s degree opens up a new world of possibilities for teacher whether they are interested in staying in the classroom or leaving the school system altogether to follow other interests.

It is possible for a person become a teacher without first getting a teaching certificate depending on what state they would like to teach in and what level of school they would like to teach. Before an individual pursues this particular career path, however, it is important to also consider things like benefits, salary, and long-term employability, which will all be affected by a person’s teaching credentials. Put bluntly, a teacher will earn more money and have a better chance at gaining tenure if they have a more advanced degree. While it is possible, a teacher without a teaching certificate will find it more difficult to find work and may not be able to secure a permanent position.

A teaching certification is the process that universities and colleges use to grant professional recognition to a person that has completed the necessary courses in order to become a licensed teacher in a particular subject. Basically, teachers who have met the requirements and earned a teaching certificate, as well is passing any state-mandated examinations, will receive a license to teach. Some credentials can only be used to teach certain grades, such as pre-K through grade 3, grades 1 through 6, and grades 5 through 8. It is usually necessary for a teacher to have completed secondary education in some subject area in order to teach grades 7 through 12.

A national teacher certification is a voluntary certification that teachers can earn through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Many states allow teachers with this type of certification to carry their license from one state to another. In order for a teacher to acquire a national certificate, they must put together a portfolio that shows their classroom work as well as pass an assessment of their knowledge. There are also differences between elementary and secondary teaching certificates. An elementary school teaching certificate is usually general, allowing a teacher to teach a number of different subjects. Secondary school certificates, on the other hand, require teachers to specialize in specific subjects such as mathematics, English, history, or science.

In general, most teachers earn their bachelor’s degree as well as a teaching certification. A certification can be earned at most colleges or universities and can often be accomplished through a Masters program, a post baccalaureate program, or an undergraduate program. Of course, there are different standards in place for each of the 50 states as far as minimum requirements go, but is usually advised that a teacher continue on their path to education even after they have reached this point.

Over the last few decades, teacher education programs have become more focused in order to help teachers become the best educators possible, while also meeting stricter regulations and guidelines. However, there are still different paths that an individual can take in order to get the education and certification that they need in order to stand at the front of the classroom as an educator. Before a person can make a truly informed decision about whether or not this particular type of education is right for them, there are a few things that they should understand. In order to know is much as possible about this career choice, here are 10 things you should know about teacher education:

1. In virtually every industrialized nation, teacher education requires a person to attend an institution of higher learning. There are often considered to be to paths that a person can take in order to fulfilling their goal of becoming a teacher. An individual can obtain a degree from a university and then continue on to earn additional qualifications, often in the form of a Masters degree, in order to become as qualified as possible before finding a career. A person can also choose instead to study both a subject as well as how to teach that subject in order to earn their qualification to become a teacher in that area.

2. A teacher education program can often be broken down into three basic parts. There is the foundational knowledge, the methods knowledge, and classroom teaching practice. The foundational knowledge often refers to subjects such as the history of education, the philosophy of education, educational psychology, or sociology of education. The methods knowledge part of teacher education refers to the different ways of teaching a specific subject. Classroom teaching practice involves observing inexperienced teacher or taking part in some type of student teacher program.

3. An important component of a teacher education program involves supervised field experiences. This may include observing an experienced classroom teacher and even limited participation in that teacher’s classroom. Student teaching is also a crucial area and often requires several weeks of teaching while under the supervision of an experienced teacher or a supervisor of some sort. A teacher may also be required to take part in an internship where they have a classroom of their own to teach while still under the supervision of a more experienced educator.

4. Some states and even local school districts have begun to make use of programs to help introduce beginning teachers to the classroom. This is advantageous for a number of reasons. Many new teachers find the experienced the overwhelming and more than a little stressful. Not only are they required to understand the subject that they are teaching, they must also adapt so that they can teach the subject effectively to learners of different kinds. Rather than simply turning a new teacher loose in a classroom, some schools have begun to provide additional support for teachers that are just beginning their professional career in the form of mentoring.

6. Because of the responsibilities placed on the shoulders of teachers, they are in one of the few professions that require continuous professional education and development. The simple fact is that there is no single course or university program that can prepare an individual for 30 or 40 years of teaching. Teachers generally need to renew their license periodically, the time between renewals will vary from one state to the next, and this generally involves passing assessment tests that gauge their knowledge and ability to present material in an effective way. In order to provide the greatest benefits to their students, many teachers welcome the opportunity to pursue an ongoing education.

7. Some states and private schools have begun to put in place certain programs that reward the most effective and highest performing teachers. While there is some debate about these types of programs, they are often put in place due to a feeling among the parents and taxpayers in an area that they need some type of assurance that the students are getting the education they deserve. This is another reason why it is important for teachers to pursue ongoing education and stay on top of the latest technologies and teaching methods available.

8. Depending on where a teacher lives, there may be two very different and separate processes that they must go through in order to gain a qualification to be teacher and the official permission to actually do the job in a public school. It is important for a person understand that a degree in teaching does not necessarily mean that a person will find a position in a school system. They must also get the necessary licensing. Likewise, it may be possible for an individual to get the license to teach but without the proper qualifications, they may find it difficult to find a job or be unable to secure permanent employment at a decent wage.

9. As stated above, it is possible in some situations for an individual to find employment as a teacher without having the traditional qualifications. This will depend greatly on local regulations but under qualified teachers often find themselves replaced by individuals who have earned advanced degrees. Many teachers who have earned their bachelor’s degree often go on to earn a Master’s degree even after they have found employment in order to secure their position and put themselves in a position to earn more money.

10. There are also different levels of education required in most states for the different teaching positions in a school system. For example, lower grades such as pre-K through third grade often require a more general education while the secondary grades, those through middle school to high school, will require a teacher to have a specialized education in a subject such as English, mathematics, biology, or history. As with most types of careers, the more qualifications that an individual has, the more likely it is that they will be able to advance or even move onto careers outside of the education system.
